Cheat TV-Show Review 2019 Cast Crew
Stars: Katherine Kelly, Molly Windsor, Tom Goodman-Hill
I always feel uncomfortable when I see a woman in a television thriller who seems to have her life in order. Leah, the main character of Cheat, does an excellent job as a professor at the University of Cambridge, considered a husband and a house full of light with a wardrobe full of tasty vaulters Cos. She keeps fit by playing tennis with her best friend, is a little amateur and allows Leah to live indirectly through her. This ordered configuration can not last.
The first episode of Cheat is a return to form for the ITV thriller. The channel has committed to the series, showing the four episodes this week, so you do not have to wait long for the closing.
The premise is simple: this is a united community where everything is not what it seems. He cheat filmed in Cambridge during the heat wave last summer, which marks instantly from the dramas inspired by Scandi Noir dominate television. This is an idyll of boat rides by the sun, cabins of chocolate boxes and cobblestone streets, which contrast with what develops. Much work is done with tense music and a sinister plot to provide a dark touch.
Everything begins to fall apart when Leah suspects that a student, Rose, is cheating on her dissertation. Who said that dialing was boring? Molly Windsor is fantastic as Rose, a confident young woman with a rich father and manipulative tendencies. She is lovely, until she decides to turn it off, and it can make you shudder with just a glance. Windsor won a Best Actress Bafta for her role in Three Girls last year, and brings the same skill and dedication to her work here. She may seem innocent, but this is a chilling performance.
These women are not direct victims, which is a refreshing change from the prevailing narrative on television, as recently criticized the actor and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Katherine Kelly, who plays Leah, is the perfect complement to the creepy Rose. She is following the tradition of ex-Coronation Street stars that pass thrillers (following Suranne Jones and Sarah Lancashire). Kelly seems to be honest to some degree, putting all her energy into staying afloat. At work, she is in the shadow of his father (an arrogant academic consuming white wine), and at home is not sure what to do for your relationship crumbles. She and her husband (Tom Goodman-Hill) are trying to conceive, but secretly she has lost sight of why they are still together. They are having sex, but she is still frustrated. Goodman-Hill is similar to the unfortunate character who played in the human robot drama, but he does it well.
The only criticism about Cheat is that it is not subtle: Leah gives lectures on power and justice. They are trying to take advantage of discussions about the later truth; where nobody knows who to believe and experts have lost their prestige.
But the performances compensate for any problem in the script and, in general, everything seems real and identifiable. Apart from when they become too psychopathic. There are flash-forward that arouse interest. If only there was a telegenic detective to put some order. Fortunately, one appears, confused by the complex characters of Leah and Rose. Hopefully it is up to the challenge.
The turn at the end of episode one suggests that Cheat is about to become even more disturbing. If you can sustain the intrigue and rhythm of this first episode, this will be a piece of TV that grabs your nails. Try not to look alone, especially if you have a cat.
