The Oscar nominee stars in Zach Braff's latest drama "A Good Person" as Allison, a woman who survives a fatal accident and strikes up an unlikely relationship with her would-be father-in-law played by Morgan Freeman. Braff writes, directs and produces the New Jersey-set feature. Pugh also makes her producing debut with the film, which serves as a reunion for Freeman and director Braff after 2017's "Going in Style."
Molly Shannon, Celeste O'Connor, Zoe Lister-Jones and Chinaza Uche complete the cast.
The official synopsis reads: Daniel (Freeman) meets Allison (Pugh), the prosperous young woman with a bright future who was involved in an unimaginable tragedy that took the life of her daughter. As a grief-stricken Daniel raises his teenage granddaughter and Allison searches for redemption, they discover that friendship, forgiveness and hope can blossom in unlikely places.
Braff and Pugh previously worked together on Braff's 2019 short film "In the Time It Takes to Get There," where Pugh plays the 18th century equivalent of a social media influencer. After their collaboration, the two began a relationship.
“The movie we did together was really probably one of my favorite experiences,” Pugh said in the interview. “It felt like a very natural and easy thing to do.”
Braff is best known for playing the recurring role of J.D. on NBC's "Scrubs," earning him an Emmy nomination in 2005 for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Other notable performances include roles in 2013's "Oz the Great and Powerful" and Gail Lerner's 2022 adaptation of "Cheaper by the Dozen."
As a director, Braff received an Emmy nomination in 2021 for directing an episode of "Ted Lasso." He previously directed the films "Garden State" and "Wish I Was Here," in which he also starred, as well as the 2017 film "Going in Style."
Braff produced the film with Pugh, along with Noah Segal, Christine Vachon, Christina Piovesan and Pamela Koffer.
“A Good Person” is scheduled to hit theaters on March 24, 2023.
