The first trailer for M3GAN introduces the assassin android in the latest horror film from the mind of James Wan.
The first trailer for M3GAN has arrived, revealing a glimpse of the latest killer dummy created by James Wan. The sci-fi horror film follows a brilliant robotics engineer at a toy company named Gemma who uses artificial intelligence to build a lifelike doll designed to be a child's best friend. After Gemma unexpectedly gains custody of her orphaned niece Cady from her, she hires prototype M3GAN to help with parenting, which, to everyone's shock, ends up going horribly wrong.
Director: Gerard Johnstone
Writers: Akela Cooper, James Wan
Stars: Allison Williams, Jenna Davis, Violet McGraw
The upcoming horror film is a collaboration between Blumhouse Productions, Wan's Atomic Monster Productions, and will be distributed by Universal. Known as the creator of the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises, Wan also shares a story credit at M3GAN alongside Malignant's Akela Cooper with Housebound director Gerard Johnstone directing. Earlier this year, the first footage of M3GAN was screened to the audience at CinemaCon. Now the full first look at the horror movie is here for all to see.
Based on the M3GAN trailer, it looks like this android doll can give Annabelle a run for her money. A prequel to The Conjuring, Annabelle told an origin story for the titular killer doll, and as a result, she launched her own sub-franchise, receiving her own prequel, Annabelle: Creation, and a sequel, Annabelle Comes Home. It's still too early to tell if M3GAN could serve as a springboard for her own film franchise, though with a hit-making horror guru like Wan behind the story and on board as producer, it's certainly a possibility.
For one thing, the trailer for M3GAN is terrifying due to its assassin android summoning a spooky uncanny valley effect. However, it's also funny at times given Megan's inexplicable love of dancing. Like Wan's latest horror film, Malignant, it seems that he and his collaborator Akela Cooper have designed M3GAN to be equally cheesy and goofy. M3GAN's wait will be a few months as the horror film opens in theaters on January 13, 2023.
