Where the Crawdad's Sing, an adaptation of Delia Owen's novel starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, is hitting theaters this summer and is already one of the most anticipated movies of 2022.
A New York Times bestseller and Amazon's best-selling fiction book for all of 2019, Where the Crawdads Sing(opens in new tab), has been adapted by Reece Witherspoon's producer Hello Sunshine after she read it as part of her Instagram book club(opens in new tab) in September 2018. The actor said making the film was "one of those really exciting once-in-a-lifetime opportunities" after falling in love with the story that follows Kya Clark, a sensitive and intelligent young woman who has survived on her own for years. in the marshes of Barkley Cove, North Carolina.
The story takes a dark turn when a man Kya was involved with is found dead and she becomes the prime suspect. However, Reece is no stranger to exciting crime dramas after making shows and movies like Big Little Lies, Little Fires Everywhere, and Gone Girl.
Following her breakout performance in "Fresh," Daisy Edgar-Jones stars in "Where the Crawdads Sing." The small-town drama/thriller is an adaptation of Delia Owens' best-selling 2018 novel and sees Edgar-Jones in a meaty role as a resilient young woman from the North Carolina swamps. The film is directed by Olivia Newton and written for the screen by Lucy Alibar, who co-wrote 2012's excellent "Beasts of the Southern Wild."
Edgar-Jones plays Kya. Abandoned as a child and shunned by most of the local townspeople, Kya survived for the most part in the swamp alone. But when a young man she's been involved with suddenly ends up dead, she becomes the prime suspect in what becomes a witch hunt. The cast also includes the always excellent David Strathairn, who instantly elevates any movie he's in. I like the setting and I like the premise. I also like what I've seen of Edgar-Jones and can't wait to see what he does with this role.
The film also features an incredible female-led team, with Olivia Newman (First Match, FBI, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD) directing, while Lucy Alibar, best known for co-writing the 2012 film Beasts of the Southern Wild, has written the script.
