Starlight Runner Entertainment will adapt the famous Japanese superhero Ultraman into a live-action television series from the United States.
Tsuburaya Productions, the studio behind the Ultra franchise, hired transmedia media producer Jeff Gomez to develop the character for the American public on multiple platforms, including the live action series.
The franchise began in 1966 and has produced thirty-four shows, nine original video animation specials, thirty films and more than fifty video game appearances. The "Ultraman" series still earns more than $ 50 million a year in Japan only with toys and merchandise.
The company Gómez has worked in the franchises of "Pirates of the Caribbean", "Men in black" and "Avatar". An adaptation of the property's anime series is scheduled for release on April 1, 2019 on Netflix.
One of Japan's most enduring pop culture icons is scheduled to return to worldwide animation through Netflix in 2019.
Late last year, a new CGI Ultraman anime was announced (via Anime News Network) in the manga pages, but now the original material is promoting a worldwide launch on Netflix next year.
The production I.G., the studio behind Blood: The Last Vampire, The End of Evangelion, Patlabor and xxHolic is animating the long-awaited series. Ghost in the Shell: Kenji Kamiyama, from Stand Alone Complex, and Shinji Aramaki from Appleseed Alpha, are directing.
The new anime is ready to serve as a sequel to the classic Ultraman live-action television series, which effectively makes the manga come alive in a new medium.
Here is a description of the new Ultraman manga from the US publisher Viz Media:
Decades ago, a being known as the Giant of Light joined Shin Hayata of the Special Scientific Search Group to save the Earth from an invasion of frightening monsters known as Kaiju. Now, many years later, those dark days are fading away in memory, and the world is at peace. But in the shadows grows a new threat, a danger that can only face a new type of hero, a new type of Ultraman ... Shinjiro is a normal teenager, but his father is the legendary Shin Hayata. When he learns that his father passed him the "Ultraman Factor" and that he possesses incredible powers, nothing will ever be the same again.
